Steve Taylor
From Musiki
Steve Taylor is possibly the definition of alternative CCM.
What Larry Norman is to the 70's, Taylor is to the 80's!
History
Steve Taylor began recording in the heyday of early 80's CCM and had some early success. However, the controversial nature of many of his lyrics put him outside the mainstream of Christian music.
In 1982, Taylor landed a recording contract with then independent Sparrow Records. He released 3 albums on Sparrow as well as 1983's EP "I Want To Be a Clone"
In 1991, Taylor temporarily moved outside the realm of the Christian music industry when he joined forces with guitarists Dave Perkins and Lynn Nichols, bassist Wade Jaynes, and drummer Mike Mead to form Chagall Guevara. The band released one self-titled album on MCA and then disbanded a year later.
In 1993, he released the last of his 4 solo studio albums and followed that in 95 Liver (not like the organ but like a more "live" live album).
In the early 90's Taylor got involved with the Newsboys and became an integral part of their success by producing and/or co-writing on all of their albums from 1994's Going Public through 2006's Go. In addition, Taylor got his feet wet in the movie business by directing the Newsboys campy musical film "Down Under the Big-Top"
In the late 90's, Taylor moved heavily into artist development by starting the record label Squint. Although Squint was a short-lived venture it had a significant impact because Taylor had an ear for solid new talent. The label helped birth a number of critically successful artists including: Sixpence None the Richer, Chevelle, Insyderz, Waterdeep, 38th Parallel, L.A. Symphony, PFR.
Taylor continues to be involved in songwriting and producing and has added a more significant movie credit. He directed and wrote "The Second Chance" which starred Michael W. Smith and won the 2005 Christian WYSIWYG Film Festival award for the years "Best Feature Film"
