About The Name

Sidewalk – This first half of the band name was actually inspired by a Jars of Clay song, “Art In me.” Dave loved the first line, “lyrics on the sidewalk speak of dreams descent, washed away by the storms that rage, the cynical lament.” He thought of it as God desperately attempting to reach us or talk to us by any means, but our own cynicism so often brushes God’s attempts aside. The “sidewalk” is about the hustle and bustle of everyday life and how sometimes we are so consumed by business or society that we overlook or just plain forget that God is trying to speak to us. Also, the sidewalk symbolizes that we are common people. We’re just like anyone else that you’d bump in to in the grocery store or pass on the street.

Prophet - Ben looked up the dictionary definition of prophet which was, “someone who speaks the truth about life”.

Combining the two, Sidewalk Prophet means that we are common people speaking the truth about life from our perspective which is as lovers and followers of Christ.

Record Themes

At its simplest form, the theme of Sidewalk Prophets’ records usually centers on the hope that Christ’s love provides. Our music definitely proclaims the Bible verse, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love” (I Corinthians 13:13).

Ministry Focus

Sidewalk Prophets has a vision to help people young and old embrace the uniqueness God has given them. The more we look at a lot of today’s problems the more we see that a lot of times people are fearful of being themselves so they follow what the world tells them they should do. We believe that finding your identity in Christ is one of the most crucial steps in truly loving others. Once people start realizing this and living confidently in it we believe there will be a visible change in our households, our communities and ultimately world.

Why did you start the mission of Sidewalk Prophets?

Dave: We started our mission as a band the day that we first met 7 years ago. From the very beginning we knew that we would be a band dedicated to spreading the love of Christ. That is the mission and the passion that drives every song and everything we do.

Ben: I’ve always felt called to minister through music. When Dave and I met in college it was a pretty instant connection. We love God, music and people. The people make the hard work worth it! We’ve made so many awesome friends and seen God do some amazing things over the years.

Justin: I joined Sidewalk Prophets because I saw something in the band that was special. They are a great group of guys with like-minded hearts and I wanted to be involved in something that I could be passionate about both ministry-wise and musically. I'm just thankful that our paths crossed and that we get to go on this journey together.

Cal: I joined with Sidewalk Prophets because I believed in the music and the ability to spread God's word and touch lives with His message.

What are you most passionate about as a band?

Dave: We are most passionate about the love of Christ!

Ben: Using our gifts and letting God work through us to bring healing and restoration to his people! It’s the best feeling!

Justin: Seeing God use our music to change people's live

Cal: Spreading the love of God through music.
